Skiing day trip in Melbourne?

I;m interested in a day trip to a skiing resort in Melbourne. There are only the 2 of us and this will be our first time in Melbourne. Can someone recommend the nearest, most convenient and most affordable place. I;ve never skied before and would just like to experience snow. It would be great if you can give me the directions (via public transport), approximate cost.. etc. Hope this is not too much to ask. Thanks a lot...
