Is the area around Oakland (CA) Amtrak safe?

I will be taking a train into Oakland and will then be needing to take BART from the Lake Merritt station. It's a 9 minute walk according to Google Maps, up Jackson past 3rd, 4th, and 5th, then under the Nimitz, then up Madison past 6th, 7th, and 8th. I will have my client (a model) with me.With all the chaos that's been happening in Oakland lately, will that walk be safe? Or should we budget a cab?|||There has not been that much chaos in Oakland. Pull yourself together. It's not like people just walk around with guns and shoot random strangers on the street. Murders are less prevalent that you think.
