New Zealand import GST buying abroad and posting to NZ

When you buy goods outside New Zealand and import by Post to you all goods are subject to potential GST and MAF levy.Goods mailed into New Zealand may be subject to import duty. Import duties are calculated on the Customs value of the goods in New Zealand dollars. The goods may also be subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 15%, based on the Customs value of the goods, and including the duty (if any) and postal/courier charges. Goods liable for duty and GST of NZ$60 or more cannot be released until the charges are paid. There will also be an import entry transaction fee (IETF) of $25.30 (including GST) and a MAF Biosecurity risk-screening levy of $12.77 (including GST) totalling $38.07.Note: If you purchase value is under NZ$60, GST may not be collected. Do not buy items for import into NZ if the Post and Packing Fee + the value of the items exceeds NZ$60 unless you realize you have to pay your Customs first before getting the items.Convert your currency value here: (you have to copy and paste as okay guides do not allow active links) http://pages.okay.co.uk/services/buyandsell/currencyconverter.htmlI.e. as of October 2011, a $39.95US value + $3.99US pack and post is equivalent to about NZ$53 and usually not subject to GST. .75 NZ$ were equivalent to about $1.00US as of the date of this guide.Source: http://www.customs.govt.nz/features/internetshopping/privateimportsbypost/Pages/default.aspx
